Walk or bike along the 606
Formerly an abandoned railway, the 606 (also known as the Bloomingdale Trail) is a multi-use elevated trail that traverses northwest Chicago. There are several street-level parks, public art installations and scenic lookout spots along the way. Don’t miss the Exelon Observatory in the Logan Square neighborhood, which is a prime spot for sunset views. The 2.7-mile trail is best explored either on foot or on two wheels. Tip: Rent a bike from one of the numerous Divvy bike-sharing stations across the city.

Try rock climbing at Maggie Daley Park
Overcome your fear of heights at Maggie Daley Park, which is the first and only rock-climbing park in Chicago. The walls here, which reach a maximum height of 40 feet, are suitable for different types of climbing: bouldering, lead-harnessed and top rope. If you’re a novice, fret not — the climbing routes range in difficulty, and there’s a section specially for beginners. Friendly park staff are also nearby to instruct and supervise climbers.

Take a stroll through Chicago Botanic Garden
The verdant Chicago Botanic Garden spans a massive 385 acres, with 27 landscaped gardens displaying an impressive variety of plants and flowers. The Native Plant Garden features blooms endemic to Illinois, such as the wild indigo and the little bluestem, while the Waterfall Garden is home to a magnificent 45-foot cascade. Also check out the Bonsai Garden, which is dotted with more than 200 bonsai — elegant, ornamental trees that have been specially trained to grow in little pots or trays.

Go stand-up paddle-boarding on Lake Michigan
With the gargantuan Lake Michigan right on its shores, Chicago is a great place for water sports like stand-up paddle-boarding.
If you already have your own gear, you can take to the water from various launch points along the Lake Michigan Water Trail, including 31st Street Beach and Osterman Beach. Alternatively, rent a board from Chicago SUP, which has locations in North Avenue Beach, Ohio Beach and Diversey Harbor. The company also conducts both group and private lessons for those new to the sport.

This gorgeous stretch of sand in the Lincoln Park neighborhood frequently ranks among Chicago’s best beaches, and for good reason. It is popular with surfers, kayakers and anglers, as well as those simply looking to lounge on its shores. Once you’ve had your dose of sun, sea and sand, check out the nearby Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary for some bird-watching.
