Choose responsible tour operators
Before booking a tour, check to make sure the tour operator is one that respects both local communities and the environment. For example, if you’re planning to go whale-watching in Los Cabos, consider Cabo Trek, the first tour operator in Mexico to be certified by the World Cetacean Alliance as a “Responsible Whale Watching Operator.” The company organizes an array of exciting expeditions — from a three-hour tour around San José del Cabo to a two-day trip to Puerto López Mateos — with the safety and wellbeing of local wildlife always front of mind.
Support local businesses
Do as the locals do and support homegrown businesses as much as possible by visiting community markets or shopping at independent boutiques. One easy way to do so is to consult directories like Shop Small Hawaii and Lowcountry
Local First for lists of local businesses to support. Or simply ask your friendly concierge at your HGV accommodation, who will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
Dine at local community projects
Also consider supporting restaurants and cafes that work with the local community. This could mean dining at venues that use only locally sourced ingredients or at establishments that actively empower disadvantaged groups. For instance, Duo58 Community Coffee Bar & Café in Orlando contributes a meal to an underprivileged child in Haiti for every meal ordered at their store. In New York City, The Migrant Kitchen in Manhattan is a Latin-Arab eatery that provides employment opportunities for immigrants and refugees.
Engage in voluntourism initiatives
In between all that sightseeing, you can also make time to help out with local conservation projects. Visitors to Oahu can restore the Loko Ea Fishpond, a sacred 400-year-old pond on the island. For those planning a trip to Miami, Museum
Volunteers for the Environment (MUVE) is a habitat restoration initiative that seeks to preserve the state’s coastal environments through data collection projects and beach clean-ups.
Stay at sustainability-minded accommodations
At HGV, we’re also ramping up our sustainability efforts. As part of our proprietary Hilton LightStay™
program, we’re committed to reducing our water consumption and improving our carbon footprint by updating our properties with LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances. In addition, we’re moving toward recycling toiletries and banning single-use plastic at all our resorts. When you stay with HGV, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that you’re doing your part for the environment.
